Language
Thai is the national language. English is widely understood and spoken} particularly in Bangkok where it is almost the major commercial language. English and some other Asian and European languages are spoken in most hotels, more up-scale shopping malls and restaurants in major convention destinations, and Thai-English road and street signs are found nationwide.
Currency
The Thai currency called Baht is based on the decimal system. Paper denominations include the 1,000 Baht note (grey), 500 Baht note (purple), 100 Baht note (red), 50 Baht note (blue), and the 20 Baht note (green). Coins comprise ten Baht, five Baht, two Baht, and one Baht. Thereafter, the one Baht is then broken down into 50 satang (half of a Baht) and 25 satang (quarter of a Baht)
Clothing
The best thing s light cool clothing and a jacket may be needed for formal meetings and dining in certain restaurants. However, please note that shorts (except knee length walking shorts), sleeveless shirts, tank tops and other beach-style attire are considered inappropriate dress when entering a religious place of worship, Royal Palaces, or government offices. Although it is hot, jeans or slacks can still be packed and in the cooler season a sweater is necessary if traveling in the North or Northeast.
Communication – Cell Phones
To use cell phones in Thailand, simply arrange for international roaming. Alternatively, there are also service counters in international airports (after Immigration and Customs) where people are able to obtain cell phone services. The leading service providers in Thailand are TRUE MOVE, AIS, and DTAC.
Communication – IDD (International Direct Dialing)
IDD (International Direct Dialing) service is available in most hotels. Alternatively, there are several options if a person needs to call internationally – buy an international calling phone card from any convenience store, or call from an international payphone using a credit card.
- The international dialing code for Thailand is +66. When making an international call to Thailand add 66 and omit the leading 0.
- For international calls from Thailand, dial 001 then the country code, area code and the telephone number.
- For the directory assistance, call 1133 for local numbers; 100 for overseas.
Getting About
Within the main city hub of Bangkok, commuting is most convenient by the Skytrain (BTS) or the Underground (MRT). BTS and MRT stations provide, free of charge, route maps to facilitate the commute. The other option is by taxi. A large fleet of new and air-conditioned metered taxis now ply the streets – they are safe and comfortable. Hotels also offer limousine services.
Outside Bangkok, where organizers are hosting their events, especially for transfers from/to the airport, for outside dining, or optional shopping or tour programs, it would be necessary to contact either minivans or coaches. Suppliers such as destination management companies and professional conference organizers would be able to help find the service providers
Electricity
Electricity outlets are 220 volts, 50 cycles and accept flat-pronged plugs. Travelers with shavers, hair dryers, IT gadgetry, and appliances shou7ld carry a plug adapter kit. Usually large hotels will have 110-volt transformers available for guests.
Tipping
This is becoming more and more common, especially if good service has been given. Most hotels and restaurants add a 10 percent service charge to the bill. However, if service has been good, a tip can also be given, and taxi drivers do not normally require a tip but again if good service has been rendered, a tip would of course be most appreciated.
